RETURN OF THE SEVEN, etc.

This rousing western triple-feature played both the Mohawk and Tri-City Twin drive-ins back in January, 1971. The US/Spanish co-production RETURN OF THE SEVEN (1966) was the first of three sequels to THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN. GUNS OF THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (1969) followed, with George Kennedy taking over the lead role. THE UGLY ONES was United Artists' release of the Italian/Spanish El Precio de un hombre (1966), with Tomas Milian; on German DVD as THE BOUNTY KILLER.

THE REIVERS / WONDERFUL AUSTRIA

This double-feature played the State in Schenectady back in January of 1970. THE REIVERS (1969) featured Will Geer, Diane Ladd, and Dub Taylor. WONDERFUL AUSTRIA was a 1964 travelogue; no home release.

THE REIVERS / BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID

Latham's Circle Twin Cinemas screened the following in March of 1970: THE REIVERS (1969) was based on a William Faulkner novel. The hit BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID (1969) was still playing five months after its initial release.

THE REIVERS / 5 CARD STUD

Here's a January, 1970 double-feature at Albany's Strand on Pearl Street (most recently an OTB). THE REIVERS (1969) was a National General release directed by Mark Rydell. FIVE CARD STUD (1968) was a Henry Hathaway western with Dean Martin and Robert Mitchum.

RAW MEAT, etc.

Back in January, 1974, when people in Upstate NY were still crazy and stoned enough to go to the drive-ins in the middle of winter, the Tri-City Drive-in had become a United Artists-owned outfit, and they screened this pair of winning exploitation bills. RAW MEAT was AIP's US title for the British horror flick DEATH LINE (1972). THE FEMALE RESPONSE (1973) was an adult film distributed by edgy AIP offshoot Trans American, featuring Harry Reems and Jennifer Welles; it doesn't seem to have ever gotten a home video release. HELLS ANGELS ON WHEELS (1967) was a decent Richard Rush biker movie, famously starring a pre-EASY RIDER Jack Nicholson. DEVIL'S ANGELS (1967), from AIP, starred John Cassavetes; has yet to apper on DVD. ANGELS FROM HELL (1968) was producer Joe Solomon's follow-up to HAOW, this time with Tom Stern in the lead, and Jack Starrett as the lawman, in a similar role to his BORN LOSERS character; also has yet to make its DVD debut.

PSYCH-OUT, etc,

Here's an interesting pair of double-features at the late, great Tri-City Twin Drive-in, from April of 1968. PSYCH-OUT (1968) was Richard Rush's summer of love psychedelic exploitation with Nicholson. THE GLORY STOMPERS (1968) was the entertainingly square biker flick, with Dennis Hopper and a killer Davie Allan score; a DVD release is badly needed on this one. THE BIBLE (1966) was John Huston's Italian/American adaptation, with Michael Parks as Adam (!). NATURE'S HALF ACRE (1951) was a Disney short documentary on the birds and bees.

THE PRIVATE NAVY OF SGT. O' FARRELL, etc.

Today we examine a July, 1968 triple-feature at the Turnpike Drive-in. THE PRIVATE NAVY OF SGT. O'FARRELL (1968) was a World War II-based Bob Hope comedy. THE PENTHOUSE (1967) was a British thriller with Suzy Kendall and Martine Beswick; never released to home video, it's only available as a bootleg. THE HILLS RUN RED was United Artists' release of the Italian western Un Fiume di dollari (1966), with Henry Silva and Dan Duryea.

THE PRESIDENT'S ANALYST, etc.

Interesting pair of triple-features at the Tri-City Twin, from July, 1968. THE PRESIDENT'S ANALYST (1967; interesting spelling there) was the unique and of-its-time James Coburn vehicle. THE OLDEST PROFESSION was the Goldstone Film Enterprises release of the European anthology Le Plus vieux métier du monde (1967); no DVD release. WILL PENNY (1968) was a western featuring a great cast (Charlton Heston, Donald Pleasence, Lee Majors, Bruce Dern, Ben Johnson, Slim Pickens, Anthony Zerbe, Luke Askew). THE HAPPENING (1967, no "s") was a Columbia hippies-vs.-mafia comedy featuring Anthony Quinn and Michael Parks; doesn't seem to have ever gotten a home video release. WILD IN THE STREETS (1968) was the Robert Thom-scripted, caustic counterculture classic from AIP. FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE (1965) was the middle film in the Leone/Eastwood trilogy.

THE POSTGRADUATE / MALE SERVICE

Here's a pair of adult films playing at Troy's Cinema Art Theatre, from January, 1971. THE POSTGRADUATE (1970) was a white-coater "documentary" from Cosmos Films. MALE SERVICE (1966) was a Mitam production directed by Arch Hudson of TORTURED FEMALES. Neither film has yet to resurface.

THE PLAY PEN GIRLS, etc.

The Mohawk Drive-in featured this adult triple-feature back in January, 1968. THE PLAY PEN GIRLS (1967) was an obscure nudie (maybe from New York) with Janet Banzet; no home release known. THE SEX CYCLE (1966) was a Joe Sarno film with Victor Bertini, the director of THE PLAY PEN GIRLS; on VHS from Alpha Blue and Something Weird. SATAN IN HIGH HEELS (1962) was a low-budget noir known for its Mundell Lowe crime jazz soundtrack.

PLANET OF THE APES / SOL MADRID

Here's a July, 1968 double-feature at the Carman Drive-in. Woodrow Parfrey, father of Feral House publisher Adam Parfrey, played Dr. Maximus in PLANET OF THE APES (1968). SOL MADRID (1968) was an MGM crime thriller starring David McCallum as the title character; doesn't seem to have gotten an official video release, but is available from bootleggers.

Here's another pair of Tri-City Twin double-features, this one from July, 1968. Did you know Felix Silla played a baby gorilla in PLANET OF THE APES (1968)? Sinatra played a P.I. in TONY ROME (1967). DON'T RAISE THE BRIDGE, LOWER THE RIVER (1967) was a Jerry Lewis comedy. BERSERK! (1967) was a horror film starring Joan Crawford; no DVD on this one yet.

The State screened this Disney package back in February, 1962. I didn't know Mel Blanc worked on PINOCCHIO (1940). BEAR COUNTRY (1953) was a short narrated by Winston Hibler.

Jazz trio The Pinlighters (Genie Jones, Rio Galietta, Neal Stark) played the Hotel Schenectady's Pinlite Lounge way back in February, 1962.

PERFORMANCE

Chapel Hill, NC's Varsity Theatre (still in business) screened the Cammell/Roeg classic PERFORMANCE (1970) back in March of 1971.

Here's an ad for Paula Sydney with the Jon Norman Trio, playing the Red Carpet in Albany (now home to the Water Works gay bar) in March, 1970.

Rensselaer's Uptown screened the biopic PATTON (1970) back in January, 1971.

PARIS BLUES, etc.

Great ad for the Turnpike Drive-in showing a pair of triple-features for different weeks of November, 1961. PARIS BLUES (1961) was a drama based in the jazz world, featuring a Duke Ellington score; no DVD release. ROSEMARY was the Films Around the World release of the West German post-war critique Das Mädchen Rosemarie (1958); no DVD as of yet. THE TARNISHED ANGELS (1958) was a Douglas Sirk adaptation of a William Faulkner novel; no DVD. THE VIRGIN SPRING (Bergman's Jungfrukällan, 1960) was said to be the inspiration for THE LAST HOUSE IN THE LEFT. THE LAST PARADISE was the United Artists release of the Italian documentary L'Ultimo paradiso (1957), focused on the people of the South Pacific; it seems to have gotten an Italian VHS release, but that's it. VIRGIN ISLAND (1958) was a British comedy with John Cassavetes and Sidney Poitier; can't find evidence of an official release, but it's available as a grey market title.

THE WONDERFUL LAND OF OZ

Somehow Barry Mahon's 1969 musical atrocity THE WONDERFUL LAND OF OZ, distributed by Childhood Productions and in "Storybook Color," made it up to the Madison for a matinee showing in January of 1970.
