Stanley Kramer's GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER (1967) rolled over from its previous year's release; the Bond spoof CASINO ROYALE (1967) also was dug out; ANZIO (1968) was an Italian/American WW2 flick with Roberts Mitchum and Ryan; A DANDY IN ASPIC (1968) was an Anthony Mann British spy movie with Laurence Harvey (no DVD release yet).

Two wild triple-features at the Tri-City Twin, from March, 1970. THE GRUESOME TWOSOME and SOMETHING WEIRD were both directed by Herschell Gordon Lewis in 1967; BORN WILD was an alternate title for THE YOUNG ANIMALS (1968) with Patty McCormack; ANGEL, ANGEL, DOWN WE GO (1969) was the only film directed by Robert Thom; CHASTITY (1969) was the infamous Cher vehicle; YOUNG, EVIL & SAVAGE (1968) was the US title for the Italian thriller Nude... si muore (1968), aka Naked You Die.

Action-packed double-feature at the Super 50 Drive-in, from July, 1968. THE GREEN BERETS (1968) was John Wayne's pro-'Nam war vehicle; FIRECREEK (1968) was the downbeat western directed by Vincent McEveety.

Only two movies per screen at the Tri-City Twin Drive-in back in July, 1968. THE GRADUATE (1967) was still bringing in crowds; TWO FOR THE ROAD (1967) was the Stanley Donen romantic drama with Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney, featuring a Henry Mancini score; THE SOUND OF MUSIC (1965) was still being screened years after its initial release; PROWLERS OF THE EVERGLADES was a 1953 Disney True Life Adventure short about alligators.

THE GRADUATE / CAPER OF THE GOLDEN BULLS

July, 1968 double-feature that played the Riverview and Mohawk drive-ins. THE GRADUATE (1967) was still going strong a year after its release. THE CAPER OF THE GOLDEN BULLS (1967) was a humorous heist flick directed by Russell Rouse (THE FASTEST GUN ALIVE); it was release on VHS by Charter back in 1987, but no DVD yet.

THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY, etc.

Albany's Turnpike Drive-in screened what must have been a LONG night at the movies back on March, 1968. Be sure to pick up the deluxe DVD of the Eli Wallach tour-de-force THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY (1968) with deleted scenes integrated back into the film. THE WICKED DREAMS OF PAULA SCHULTZ (1968) was a Cold War comedy with Elke Sommer and Bob Crane; no DVD yet. THE ST. VALENTINE'S DAY MASSACRE (1967) was Roger Corman's star-studded gangster picture.

GOLIATH AND THE BARBARIANS

Awesome ad for the screening of GOLIATH AND THE BARBARIANS at Proctor's in Schenectady from January, 1960. It was AIP's US release of the Italian peplum Il Terrore dei barbari (1959), with the great Steve Reeves. No US DVD release, though it is on Region 2 DVD from Warner.

THE GOLDEN BOX / PLEASURE PLANTATION

Softcore double-feature from July, 1971 at Raleigh's Center Drive-in. THE GOLDEN BOX (1970) was directed by Don Davis and featured Marsha Jordan and Ann Myers. PLEASURE PLANTATION (1970) featured Kim Pope and Linda Boyce. The ad claims they were made in North Carolina, but were likely made in (respectively) L.A. and NYC. Something Weird carries both titles on VHS and DVD-R.

THE GODFATHERS OF HONG KONG

The Ambassador in Raleigh screened THE GODFATHERS OF HONG KONG (1974), with Gordon Mitchell, in January, 1974. No DVD release but it's availabe on bootleg sites.

THE GLORY STOMPERS / THE CHRISTMAS KID

Raleigh's great Center Drive-in screened this double-feature in March, 1968. THE GLORY STOMPERS (1968) was a cool, if corny, biker flick; star Dennis Hopper (whose heavy methoding clashed with the old-fashioned acting of the teeth-gritting variety his fellow stars perfed) claims to have directed much of it; THE CHRISTMAS KID (1967) was a Spanish/American western directed by Sid Pink of THE ANGRY RED PLANET fame. No DVD on either title.

GAILY, GAILY / BUONA SERA, MRS. CAMPBELL

March, 1970 comedy double-feature at the State in Schenectady. GAILY, GAILY (1969) was Norman Jewison's follow-up to THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR; BUONA SERA, MRS. CAMPBELL (1968) was set in WW2-era Italy. No DVD on either title yet.

GABRIELLA, etc.

January, 1974 adult triple-feature at Raleigh's Center Drive-in...GABRIELLA (1972) was the softcore movie later re-edited into CLASS OF '74; Johnny Legend says this earlier version was never released theatrically but I guess he was wrong; Something Weird has it on VHS and DVD-R, and the later version is available on bootleg labels. SUGAR COOKIES (1973) was the NYC-shot adult horror film with Mary Woronov and Lynn Lowry. Can't find any info on 3 FOR A PARTY.

FREAKS, etc.

Wild triple-feature from January, 1971, which screened at Proctor's in Schenectady and the Oxford in North Troy. One for the heads, I guess. Wonder how the print for FREAKS (1932) looked? NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968) is available on about a million labels, but I think the Elite version is the one to go with. Funny misprint for Buñuel's Un chien andalou (1929).

FRANKENSTEIN MUST BE DESTROYED, etc. part 2

One screen at this Tri-City Twin date from March, 1970 featured a Hammer triple-bill: FRANKENSTEIN MUST BE DESTROYED (1969), DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE (1968), and the thriller THE TRYGON FACTOR (1966); the other screened a Disney double-feature: IN SEARCH OF THE CASTAWAYS and RASCAL (see previous post).

Albany's Turnpike Drive-in screened this Hammer triple-feature in March, 1970. FRANKENSTEIN MUST BE DESTROYED (1969) was the fifth in the series; DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE (1968) was the fourth in its series; THE DEVIL'S BRIDE was the US title for 1968's THE DEVIL RIDES OUT.

FORNICON / CANDY BABY

Obscure double-feature at Raleigh's glorious sleazepit Center Drive-in, from July, 1971: FORNICON was the US title for George Harrison Mark's UK drama PATTERN OF EVIL (1967); no info on CANDY BABY (1969) other than it featured the infamous Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Neither film has been seen on home video.

FLESH AND DESIRE, etc.

A nice juxtaposition of foreign obscurities on one screen, and Hollywood epic on the other, here at the Tri-City Twin in March, 1967. FLESH AND DESIRE is the US version (distributed by Ellis Films) of the French/Italian drama La Chair et le diable (1954, no DVD); BLONDE WITCH was Ellis' version of the French/Swedish La Sorcière (1956, no DVD); not sure about HOUSE OF FEAR, but maybe it's the 1945 Sherlock Holmes film? CLEOPATRA was of course the 1963 Taylor/Burton bio.

THE FEARLESS VAMPIRE KILLERS

X-rated double-feature at the Colony Art from January, 1976. FAREWELL SCARLET (1975) starred Terri Hall and Kim Pope; can't find any info on EXECUTIVE CHOICE.

FANNY HILL MEETS DR. EROTICO, etc.

The enticing ad for Barry Mahon's FANNY HILL MEETS DR. EROTICO (1967) makes it that much more painful that a print has yet to resurface. Rounding out this March, 1968 triple-feature at Guilderland, NY's Carman Drive-in are the UK actioner MOZAMBIQUE (1965, yet to make DVD) and NAUGHTY GIRLS, which I'm assuming is a retitling of Barry Mahon's NAUGHTY NUDES (1965, on VHS from Something Weird).

FANNY HILL / ANYONE CAN PLAY

These days, Proctor's in Schenectady hosts family-friendly Broadway touring shows (and even censored The Full Monty, the only theater on the tour to do so), but back in January, 1970 they screened fare of a more adult nature. This FANNY HILL was the Swedish 1968 version, with Diana Kjær in the title role; ANYONE CAN PLAY (1968) was the Paramount release of the French/Italian comeday Le Dolci signore (1968). Neither title has made it to DVD.

THE ONE AND ONLY, GENUINE, ORIGINAL FAMILY BAND / BAMBI

Proctor's screened this Disney double-feature in July, 1968; THE ONE AND ONLY, GENUINE, ORIGINAL FAMILY BAND (1968) had an interesting cast, which included Richard Deacon, Goldie Hawn, and Butch Patrick; this was one of the many revivals for BAMBI (1942). Looks like the Schenectady theater closed for a day in respect to Fabian Theatres co-owner Samuel Rosen.

FACES

The Cinema Delaware screened Cassavetes' FACES in February, 1969.

In February, 1962 at the Colony in Schenectady you could see EXODUS (1960) and Disney's documentary JUNGLE CAT (1959).

Jess Franco invaded Raleigh, NC's Center Drive-in back in May, 1971 with EUGENIE...THE STORY OF HER JOURNEY INTO PERVERSION (70); BARQUERO (1970) was a western starring Lee Van Cleef and Warren Oates.

ERIKA'S HOT SUMMER / THE SECRET SEX LIVES OF ROMEO & JULIET

The Colony Art Theater in Schenectady (now the site of a used car lot) screened this sexploitation double-feature from Boxoffice International in January, 1971. ERIKA'S HOT SUMMER (1971) starred Erica Gavin and was directed by Gary Graver. THE SECRET SEX LIVES OF ROMEO & JULIET (1969) was directed by Bethel Buckalew.

DR. GOLDFOOT & THE GIRL BOMBS / THE BIG TNT SHOW

This double-feature played Raleigh, NC's Center Drive-in back in January, 1967. Mario Bava directed the spy spoof DR. GOLDFOOT & THE GIRL BOMBS (1966); THE BIG TNT SHOW (1966) had some good performances and deserves a DVD release.

DOCTOR DOLITTLE / CARESSED

No, you couldn't see these two at the same time back in January, 1969 at Schenectady's Colony Theater, but you could take the kids to the matineee of DOCTOR DOLITTLE (1967), and skip out later to see CARESSED (1964), the Joseph Brenner title for SWEET SUBSTITUTE.

Comedian Doc Circe played the Delabar (now a Vietnamese restaurant) in Albany back in January, 1970. The Sounds of Music provided tunes.

Ballston Lake's Super 50 Drive-in featured this double-bill in June, 1968. THE DEVIL'S BRIGADE (1968) was a manly WW2 flick with manly William Holden; Leone's A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS (1964) was revived for backup.

The ever-reliable Turnpike Drive-in in Albany featured this bizarre triple-feature in chilly February, 1962. Sinatra starred in THE DEVIL AT 4 O'CLOCK (1961) with Spencer Tracy; EVERYTHING'S DUCKY (1961) was directed by Don Taylor; and of all the possibilites to end with, why the Swedish/West German doc Den Blodiga tiden, released in the US as MEIN KAMPF (1960)?

Back in March, 1970 the Klam Steam Tavern (still operating in Clifton Park, NY) hosted Denny and the Drifters, featuring (thee?) Dee Clark.

DARK OF THE SUN, etc.

Albany's Turnpike Drive-in hosted this MGM triple-feature in July, 1968. DARK OF THE SUN was the US title (and title of the source novel) for Jack Cardiff's UK actioner THE MERCENARIES (1968), yet to make DVD under either title; POINT BLANK (1967) was the innovative John Boorman crime thriller; DOCTOR, YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING! (1967) was a comedy from director Peter Tewksbury, no DVD yet.

Night in the Middle East

Back in July, 1968 the Guard Room Lounge in Albany's Thruway Motor Inn put together this belly-dancing/stripping/go-go revue with Jemela Omar and the Danny Saphire Trio.

DANDY / 1000 PLANE RAID

That den of iniquity in Raleigh, the Center Drive-in, featured this double-bill in January, 1971. The IMDb lists DANDY (with John Alderman) as a 1972 General Film Corp. release, but this ad proves it was released at least a year earlier. 1000 PLANE RAID was actually titled THE THOUSAND PLANE RAID (1969), and directed by Boris Sagal. Neither film has yet to see a DVD release.
