Jack Starrett 35mm Screenings! Car crash action!

Some of you know I'm co-writing a book on actor/director Jack Starrett. Well, the George Eastman House in Rochester, NY is a running a killer series of car chase and car crash movies all summer. My writing partner Chris Poggiali will be introducing Jack Starrett's A SMALL TOWN IN TEXAS (1976) and Lamont Johnson's THE LAST AMERICAN HERO (1973) on 8/14, and on 8/21 (a day before my 40th birthday) I'll be introducing a classic Peter Fonda '70s drive-in double feature: Jack Starrett's RACE WITH THE DEVIL (1975) and John Hough's DIRTY MARY, CRAZY LARRY (1974)! We're writing the program notes for both nights. These are glorious 35mm screenings, so come on out if you can!

Starrett's exploitation pics were a big part of my teenage moviegoing experiences. Despite that, and despite my also being familiar with his acting work, it took me decades to figure out that he was the same guy who played Gabby Johnson (as Claude Ennis Starrett Jr.) in "Blazing Saddles"! Who knew that he was such a gifted comic actor--were his comic abilties exploited in any other films?
