SIGN OF THE GLADIATOR was AIP's dubbed version of Nel segno di Roma (1959), a French/Italian/West German/Yugoslavian co-production starring Anita Ekberg and Georges Marchal; no DVD release known. MAN ON THE PROWL (1957) was a United Artists thriller with James Best and Mala Powers; doesn't seem to have gotten even a VHS release.

"All girl trio" The Sights and Sounds played the Cabaret on Central Ave. in Albany back in March, 1970.

SERGEANT RYKER

The Turnpike Drive-in screened this triple-feature in June, 1968. The courtroom drama SERGEANT RYKER (1968) was directed by Buzz Kulick; no DVD release. The comedy-western THE SHAKIEST GUN IN THE WEST (1968) was directed by Alan Rafkin. THE NAKED RUNNER (1967) was a UK spy thriller; no DVD release.

SEXUAL PRACTICES IN SWEDEN / I NEED

Here's a January, 1971 double-feature at the Cinema Art. SEXUAL PRACTICES IN SWEDEN (1970) was a US-lensed white-coater released by William Mishkin; on VHS and DVD-R from Something Weird. I NEED was Ferd Sebastian's roughie I NEED A MAN (1967), released by Paul Mart Productions; no home release known.

THE SEXTERMINATORS / MAROONED

This strange double-feature played the Center Drive-in back in April, 1971. Emerson Film Enterprises released the obscure THE SEXTERMINATORS (1970), which has some sci-fi angles; on VHS and DVD-R from Something Weird. John Sturges' MAROONED (1969) starred Gregory Peck.

SERGEANTS 3 / THE TWO LITTLE BEARS

Proctor's screened this double-feature in February, 1963. The Rat Pack western comedy SERGEANTS 3 (1962) has yet to make its DVD debut. Neither has the family fantasy THE TWO LITTLE BEARS (1961). Not sure if either even made it to VHS.

SEDUCTION BY THE SEA / THE LOVE ROOT

The Center Drive-in screened this Europix Consolidated double-feature back in January, 1969. SEDUCTION BY THE SEA was the US release of the 1963 West German/Yugoslavian drama Verführung am Meer, with Peter van Eyck and Elke Sommer. THE LOVE ROOT was the French/Italian comedy La Mandragola (1965). Neither film has had a US home video release.

SCORPIO '70 (1970) was directed by Henri Pachard as "Ronald Sullivan." THE DETENTION GIRLS (1969), was a women-in-prison flick. Neither of these has surfaced to home video.

SCARLET NEGLIGEE / HOT BLOODED WOMAN

Today it's an enticing ad for a Texas-made adult double-feature at the Center Drive-in, from January, 1969; check out those silhouette caps. SCARLET NEGLIGEE (1968) was directed by Ron Scott, and featured Byron Lord. HOT BLOODED WOMAN (1965) was directed by Dale Berry; Bill Thurman, who appears here, will be the subject of an upcoming Chateau Vulgaria career retrospective. Both films were released by Crescent International Pictures and are on VHS and DVD-R from Something Weird.

SANDRA, THE MAKING OF A WOMAN / PEDDLERS OF SIN

Here's a nice, sleazy double-feature from the Colony Art, in January, 1971. SANDRA, THE MAKING OF A WOMAN (1970) starred Monica Gayle (where are you now?) as a young woman who's left her abusive home for an erotic journey with Uschi Digard and others; on VHS and DVD-R from Something Weird. PEDDLERS OF SIN (1967) was a Mitam production with Capri; has yet to surface to home video.

ROYAL FLESH

The Colony Art screened this adult double-feature in January of 1971; wish I could make out the second movie. ROYAL FLESH was a retitling of THE UNDERCOVER SCANDALS OF HENRY VIII (1970) with Lawrence Adams, Forman Shane, and Lori Brown; no home release known.

ROSEMARY'S BABY / BAREFOOT IN THE PARK

This bizarre double-feature played the Super 50 Drive-in back in July, 1968. Polanski's dark ROSEMARY'S BABY (1968) was a strange juxtaposition with Neil Simon's sunny BAREFOOT IN THE PARK (1967).

The Hellman screened Franco Zeffirelli's British/Italian production of ROMEO AND JULIET (1968) in January, 1969.

THE ROMAN SPRING OF MRS. STONE / THE DEADLY COMPANIONS

The Mohawk Drive-in screened this double feature in February, 1962. THE ROMAN SPRING OF MRS. STONE (1961) was a romantic drama with Vivien Leigh and Warren Beatty. THE DEADLY COMPANIONS (1961) was Sam Peckinpah's first feature film.

THE ROAD HUSTLERS / THE WILD RACERS

This AIP double-feature played the Tri-City, Mohawk, and Riverview drive-ins back in May of 1968. The rare title THE ROAD HUSTLERS (1968) was a moonshine action flick with Jim Davis and Scott Brady; it's never had a home video release for some reason. THE WILD RACERS (1968) was a race car drama starring Fabian and Mimsy Farmer, and featuring some additional direction by Roger Corman and Francis Ford Coppola; I know of no home release but it has been broadcast on the Speedvision channel.

RETURN OF THE SEVEN, etc.

This rousing western triple-feature played both the Mohawk and Tri-City Twin drive-ins back in January, 1971. The US/Spanish co-production RETURN OF THE SEVEN (1966) was the first of three sequels to THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN. GUNS OF THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (1969) followed, with George Kennedy taking over the lead role. THE UGLY ONES was United Artists' release of the Italian/Spanish El Precio de un hombre (1966), with Tomas Milian; on German DVD as THE BOUNTY KILLER.

THE REIVERS / WONDERFUL AUSTRIA

This double-feature played the State in Schenectady back in January of 1970. THE REIVERS (1969) featured Will Geer, Diane Ladd, and Dub Taylor. WONDERFUL AUSTRIA was a 1964 travelogue; no home release.

THE REIVERS / BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID

Latham's Circle Twin Cinemas screened the following in March of 1970: THE REIVERS (1969) was based on a William Faulkner novel. The hit BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID (1969) was still playing five months after its initial release.

THE REIVERS / 5 CARD STUD

Here's a January, 1970 double-feature at Albany's Strand on Pearl Street (most recently an OTB). THE REIVERS (1969) was a National General release directed by Mark Rydell. FIVE CARD STUD (1968) was a Henry Hathaway western with Dean Martin and Robert Mitchum.

RAW MEAT, etc.

Back in January, 1974, when people in Upstate NY were still crazy and stoned enough to go to the drive-ins in the middle of winter, the Tri-City Drive-in had become a United Artists-owned outfit, and they screened this pair of winning exploitation bills. RAW MEAT was AIP's US title for the British horror flick DEATH LINE (1972). THE FEMALE RESPONSE (1973) was an adult film distributed by edgy AIP offshoot Trans American, featuring Harry Reems and Jennifer Welles; it doesn't seem to have ever gotten a home video release. HELLS ANGELS ON WHEELS (1967) was a decent Richard Rush biker movie, famously starring a pre-EASY RIDER Jack Nicholson. DEVIL'S ANGELS (1967), from AIP, starred John Cassavetes; has yet to apper on DVD. ANGELS FROM HELL (1968) was producer Joe Solomon's follow-up to HAOW, this time with Tom Stern in the lead, and Jack Starrett as the lawman, in a similar role to his BORN LOSERS character; also has yet to make its DVD debut.

PSYCH-OUT, etc,

Here's an interesting pair of double-features at the late, great Tri-City Twin Drive-in, from April of 1968. PSYCH-OUT (1968) was Richard Rush's summer of love psychedelic exploitation with Nicholson. THE GLORY STOMPERS (1968) was the entertainingly square biker flick, with Dennis Hopper and a killer Davie Allan score; a DVD release is badly needed on this one. THE BIBLE (1966) was John Huston's Italian/American adaptation, with Michael Parks as Adam (!). NATURE'S HALF ACRE (1951) was a Disney short documentary on the birds and bees.

THE PRIVATE NAVY OF SGT. O' FARRELL, etc.

Today we examine a July, 1968 triple-feature at the Turnpike Drive-in. THE PRIVATE NAVY OF SGT. O'FARRELL (1968) was a World War II-based Bob Hope comedy. THE PENTHOUSE (1967) was a British thriller with Suzy Kendall and Martine Beswick; never released to home video, it's only available as a bootleg. THE HILLS RUN RED was United Artists' release of the Italian western Un Fiume di dollari (1966), with Henry Silva and Dan Duryea.

THE PRESIDENT'S ANALYST, etc.

Interesting pair of triple-features at the Tri-City Twin, from July, 1968. THE PRESIDENT'S ANALYST (1967; interesting spelling there) was the unique and of-its-time James Coburn vehicle. THE OLDEST PROFESSION was the Goldstone Film Enterprises release of the European anthology Le Plus vieux métier du monde (1967); no DVD release. WILL PENNY (1968) was a western featuring a great cast (Charlton Heston, Donald Pleasence, Lee Majors, Bruce Dern, Ben Johnson, Slim Pickens, Anthony Zerbe, Luke Askew). THE HAPPENING (1967, no "s") was a Columbia hippies-vs.-mafia comedy featuring Anthony Quinn and Michael Parks; doesn't seem to have ever gotten a home video release. WILD IN THE STREETS (1968) was the Robert Thom-scripted, caustic counterculture classic from AIP. FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE (1965) was the middle film in the Leone/Eastwood trilogy.

THE POSTGRADUATE / MALE SERVICE

Here's a pair of adult films playing at Troy's Cinema Art Theatre, from January, 1971. THE POSTGRADUATE (1970) was a white-coater "documentary" from Cosmos Films. MALE SERVICE (1966) was a Mitam production directed by Arch Hudson of TORTURED FEMALES. Neither film has yet to resurface.

THE PLAY PEN GIRLS, etc.

The Mohawk Drive-in featured this adult triple-feature back in January, 1968. THE PLAY PEN GIRLS (1967) was an obscure nudie (maybe from New York) with Janet Banzet; no home release known. THE SEX CYCLE (1966) was a Joe Sarno film with Victor Bertini, the director of THE PLAY PEN GIRLS; on VHS from Alpha Blue and Something Weird. SATAN IN HIGH HEELS (1962) was a low-budget noir known for its Mundell Lowe crime jazz soundtrack.

PLANET OF THE APES / SOL MADRID

Here's a July, 1968 double-feature at the Carman Drive-in. Woodrow Parfrey, father of Feral House publisher Adam Parfrey, played Dr. Maximus in PLANET OF THE APES (1968). SOL MADRID (1968) was an MGM crime thriller starring David McCallum as the title character; doesn't seem to have gotten an official video release, but is available from bootleggers.

The State screened this Disney package back in February, 1962. I didn't know Mel Blanc worked on PINOCCHIO (1940). BEAR COUNTRY (1953) was a short narrated by Winston Hibler.

Jazz trio The Pinlighters (Genie Jones, Rio Galietta, Neal Stark) played the Hotel Schenectady's Pinlite Lounge way back in February, 1962.

PERFORMANCE

Chapel Hill, NC's Varsity Theatre (still in business) screened the Cammell/Roeg classic PERFORMANCE (1970) back in March of 1971.
